Knox’s debut album is here after four years of releasing music. Going, Going, Gone is a collection of alt-pop heartbreak and bedroom confessions that only a 20-something-year-old could write. This LP is an amalgamation of everything Knox has worked towards in his journey, and the world is finally able to hear it.
His breakout single “Sneakers” first took off in 2023, thanks to a viral TikTok dance from user @benevieve, and now it has over 41 million streams and 36 thousand TikToks using it as a sound. This song paved the way for everything that followed, including a sold-out headlining tour as well as performances at Lollapalooza and the VMAs Block Party. Knox has accomplished an impressive amount already, before even releasing a full-length album.
Following a string of major career milestones, Knox could have easily coasted into this release with a tracklist packed with fan-favorite singles. Unlike many debut albums that feel like a collection of previously released singles, Going, Going, Gone keeps things fresh. Only five songs were shared ahead of the release including "Pick Your Poison," "50/50," and "Not The 1975." Out of the 16 tracks on the album, that means fans are mostly getting new material to dive into. With how rare that is these days, it makes this release feel all the more special.
Two standout tracks that deserve extra attention:
"She's Not Okay" is a great example of Knox's ability to tell stories through his music while keeping everything fun and upbeat to distract from the negative-leaning traits being mentioned throughout. Starting the track with the lyrics "She went off the meds again, said she likes her messy head" immediately explains the song title. As the song continues, various other qualities are mentioned to the point that it sounds like a song about needing to leave a toxic relationship, until Knox sings "Sometimes love hurts, but I love her anyway."
It’s the kind of song that begs to be blasted in the car with the windows down and scream-sung from start to finish. It walks a fine line between chaos and empathy, capturing the intricacy of loving someone who isn’t always easy to love.
"Win Some, Lose Somebody" feels like the other side of the coin. A song about how easy adolescence was until the fame hit. The lyrics are humbly bragging about reaching and surpassing dreams along with personal and professional successes, but it also mentions the loss of friends along the way. While the music might directly parallel the experience of a celebrity, it's something that happens to everybody. As we age, friendships fizzle out, and it can often come at moments of big personal growth, but that doesn't mean the growth wasn't worth it. "Hey kid, you're gonna go far... but when you win some, you lose somebody."
In a livestream where Knox played the full album, he gave some background information of his tracks. I only caught the end of the live, but after playing "All-American Tragedy," he laughed about his father's response when he first heard it, saying "That's tough." Another bit that was mentioned was about the song formerly known as "UltraBasedGodSpaghetti," but known officially as "Head First." He specifically requested that fans coming to his upcoming shows bring signs that say "UltraBasedGodSpaghetti."
If you're a fan of artists like Huddy, LØLØ, Taylor Acorn, or Braden Bales, Going, Going, Gone should be at the top of your listening list. The album is streaming everywhere now!
Knox is also hitting the road on the Going, Going, Gone Tour with special guests The Wldlfe. Tickets are selling out quickly, with multiple dates already sold out. Catch him in a city near you! Tickets can be found here.
